Patriotic Napkin Rings

Add a splash of patriotism to Independence Day place settings with our red, white, and blue napkin rings. The intricate accessories are simple to create.

All you need is colorful grosgrain ribbon, a handful of  buttons, fabric glue, and some covered elastic. 

To make the rings stand out, loop them around solid-colored napkins, such as the cobalt-blue linen ones we selected.

Napkin Ring How-To
You will need a 15-inch-long piece of 1/2-inch-wide grosgrain ribbon for each napkin ring. To begin, make a series of 1/2-inch accordion folds in the ribbon, holding them in place as you go. Push a threaded needle with a 1-inch tail through the gathered folds, along the bottom edge. Holding on to both ends of the thread, carefully slide the folds into the shape of a circle. Before closing the circle, tie the ends of the thread into a knot, snipping off any excess. Glue the ends of the ribbon together with fabric glue to create a full circle with a small hole in the middle. Thread 4 inches of covered elastic through 2 holes of a button, and tie the ends into a knot. Glue the button to the center of the bottom side of the burst.

Fresh Tomato Tart

Fresh Tomato Tart

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 of a 15-ounce folded refrigerated unbaked piecrust (1 crust)
  • 1-1/2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese (6 ounces)
  • 4 Roma or small regular tomatoes
  • 3/4 cup loosely packed fresh basil leaves
  • 4 cloves garlic
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise or salad dressing
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground white pepper
  • Fresh basil leaves (optional)

Directons:

1. Unfold the piecrust according to package directions. Line a 9-inch tart pan with pastry (it's easier to remove the baked tart if pan has a removable bottom). Press the pastry into the fluted sides of the tart pan and trim the edges. Don't prick. Partially bake in a 450 degree F oven for 5 to 7 minutes or until pastry is slightly dry.
2. Remove from oven. Sprinkle with 1/2 cup of the mozzarella cheese. Cool in pan on a wire rack. Reduce oven temperature to 375 degree F.
3. Meanwhile, cut the tomatoes into wedges; drain the wedges on paper towels. Arrange the tomato wedges over the melted cheese in a baked crust.
4. In a food processor bowl, combine basil and garlic; cover and process with on-off turns until coarsely chopped. Or snip the basil and mince the garlic.
5. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the basil-garlic mixture, the remaining shredded mozzarella cheese, the mayonnaise, the grated Parmesan cheese, and pepper. Spread the mixture evenly over tomato wedges.
6. Bake in a 375 degree F oven for about 25 minutes or until cheese is golden. Let stand 5 minutes before cutting into wedges. Serve warm. If you like, garnish with additional basil leaves. Makes 8 appetizer or 4 main-dish servings.

Fun for the 4th

Rocket Favors

Send your guests to the moon with these lively rockets. They make playful favor packages for an Independence Day bash or a child's summer birthday. And making them is a snap -- no rocket science required.
These cute favor packages are in the new July issue of Martha Stewart Living.
Perfect for a 4th of July party or any summer party for that matter!

Tools and Materials:
  • Rocket Crackers Clip Art
  • 8 1/2-by-11-inch heavyweight paper, in Matte
  • Double-sided tape
  • 8-by-5 1/2-inch pieces of white tissue paper
  • White twine
  • Hot-glue gun
  • American Starlights Candy (or any Red, White &/or Blue Candy)
Rocket Favor How To:
  1. Print the Rocket Crackers Clip Art onto heavyweight paper; cut out the shapes.
  2. Place the rectangular clip art blank side up. affix double-sided tape to 1 long edge. Fold a piece of tissue paper in half (so it measures 4 by 5 1/2 inches). Place the tissue fold at the bottom of the card stock, pressing it to the tape to secure.
  3. Roll the card stock and tissue into a tube, and secure with double-sided tape. Cinch the tissue at the bottom of the rocket, and tie it with twine.
  4. Roll fan-shaped clip art into a cone; secure with hot glue. Place candies inside rocket. Use hot glue to attach cone to body.
